Pani Culture

The Way of the Isles

Pani people do not recognize the caste system of continental Gor. They depend on rice as a staple as opposed to Sa-Tarna; hence, they commonly drink sake while paga is rare and expensive.

High Pani used Larls as prison camp guards and near the Shogun’s throne, controlling them with wands like living fences. They are deeply aware of rank and status, unlike continental Gor where respect is shown equally among men.

Names hold great significance—having a surname denotes higher status, often reserved for Daimyos and nobles. They also have contract women, who are not slaves but not considered free either.

Communication between islands was once carried by Vulo birds before tarns were introduced—though tarns could not fly far over Thassa, their use remained limited. Pani warriors pride themselves on literacy and refinement.

Free women are of lower status, considered second-class citizens unless bonded to a high-ranking officer. They must bow even to male children, though they may own or operate businesses—something frowned upon for free women on continental Gor.

The Pani speak both their native tongue and Gorean. On our sim, we use English, with the occasional Japanese phrase welcomed as homage to their traditions.
